Founded: December 9, 1920, by Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell Guernsey (Mrs. George T.)

Incorporated: April 25, 1921.

Colors: Colonial Blue & Yellow

Emblem: Oak Leaf

Seal: The Seal of this Society shall be composed of an open wreath of acorns and oak leaves around a shield. The border of the shield shall bear the name of the Society, “National Society Daughters of the American Colonists.” In the center of the shield shall be an oak tree in full foliage.

Who is a “Daughter of the American Colonists”?
She is a person who shares the devotion to her country and the principles upon which it was founded that inspired her ancestors. She is a person who believes that the gifts of the past, both spiritual and material, should be preserved, and who has deep concerns for the welfare of the nation’s government and its people.
The objective of the society is patriotic, historical and educational: to research the history and deeds of the American colonists, and to record and publish them; to commemorate deeds of colonial interest; to inculcate and foster love of the United States of America and its institutions by all its residents; and to obey its laws and venerate its flag, the emblem of its power and civic righteousness. Our Virginia Chapters enjoy the comradery with our members across the state, and like sharing our proud history and colonial ancestry with one another!

National Theme: To commemorate and honor the men, women, and children of the first English colony in North America in 1587, and the founding of the original thirteen colonies which became the United States of America.

National Scripture: If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. — Psalms 139:9-10

National Motto: Past, Present, Future

The Motto Emphasis is “Past” for the Administration’s first year.

National President’s Project: To provide funding for interpretive educational signage and displays at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island, Mateo, Dare County, North Carolina, the site of the first English settlement in the present day United States, and the location of the “Lost Colony.”

Virginia State Scripture: She speaks with wisdom and teaches with kindness. She opens her mouth with discretion, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. [Proverbs 31:25-26]

Virginia State Motto: Chose to live in the present, while understanding the foibles of our ancestors. Only through understanding our past can we forge a meaningful future.

Virginia State Regent’s Project: Preservation of Genealogical Records at the Library of Virginia. Funding of the digitization and indexing of Virginia colonial records. The specific project or projects will depend on the money raised by Virginia DAC. Preservation of genealogical records is also a key focus area of the National President, Mary Raye Caspar.
